Most outages I have had came from clever setups. Fewer moving parts, plain config files and a weekly look at the logs have done more for uptime than any dashboard.

Notes on backups that actually restore
A backup is only a hypothesis until you restore it. I now keep a small script that restores last night's archive into a scratch directory and diffs a few known files.
Why I still like static pages
They load fast, they are easy to move between hosts, and they never need a security patch at three in the morning.
